National Symphony Orchestra Reprises Popular Performances aboard Queen Mary 2

National Symphony Orchestra Reprises Popular Performances aboard Cunard's Queen Mary 2
National Symphony Orchestra Reprises Popular Performances aboard Cunard's Queen Mary 2

Cunard Line guests aboard the 14 October 2012 Eastbound Transatlantic Crossing on flagship Queen Mary 2 will have the opportunity to enjoy performances by select members of London’s prestigious National Symphony Orchestra (NSO).

Under the direction of GRAMMY®-nominated conductor Anthony Inglis, the NSO will give two concerts throughout the seven-day Crossing, one a tribute to American music, and the other in traditional “Last Night of the Proms” style.  In an exclusive partnership between Cunard Line and the NSO, guests will have the opportunity to join an all-passenger chorus.  They will rehearse and perform with Inglis and the NSO on stage and lead the audience in song during the latter concert, on the final evening of the voyage.

The line-up for this year’s passenger-led chorus includes landmark numbers such as “Rule, Britannia!,” “Jerusalem,” and “Land of Hope and Glory.”  Guests interested in participating in this year’s chorus can find detailed information in advance of the sailing here.

“From our award-winning lecture series and magnificent on board theatrical productions, to this exclusive partnership with the National Symphony Orchestra, we are pleased to continue to offer our guests the finest in on board enrichment and entertainment,” said Peter Shanks, president of Cunard Line.

Conductor Anthony Inglis commented, “A Cunard crossing of the Atlantic had been a dream of mine since I was a boy brought up in Cowes [England] in the 60s and first saw the former Cunard Queens sailing out of Southampton past The Brambles.  To take part with my orchestra on the magnificent Queen Mary 2 of such a wonderful occasion as the two concerts we give, one of which will include some volunteer passengers, is that dream come true.”

Inglis continued, “This will be our fourth crossing, and each time the opportunity to take part is keenly sought by both orchestra members and the chorus of passengers, let alone seats for the actual performances.  So much fun is had by all that everyone will want to do it again – and they can, next year.”

The only liner to provide regularly scheduled Transatlantic service between New York and Southampton, Queen Mary 2 offers the ultimate luxury cruise vacation, rich in classic British traditions, fine cuisine and stimulating on board enrichment.

This year’s season includes several new offerings, such as new theatrical productions, jazz workshops, lecture programmes, dining menus and spa treatments.

Guests can also take advantage of the popular Cunard Insights enrichment programme, which offers lectures by famous authors, historians, celebrities and personalities.  This season’s line-up includes such guests as former BBC news anchor and Royal correspondent, Nicholas Bowen; Chief White House Correspondent for U.S. News & World Report, Kenneth Walsh; and Steve Rivellino, TV producer and former vice president and general manager of New York’s Radio City Music Hall™.

Nights on board a Cunard Transatlantic Crossing are filled with Royal Nights themed balls, where guests can dance the night away to a live orchestra in the Queens Room, the largest ballroom at sea; while days are spent with such leisurely activities as perusing more than 8,000 books in the largest library at sea, enjoying traditional white-gloved afternoon tea, or exploring the cosmos in the only planetarium at sea.

“Consumer response to our initial Boston cruises aboard the Carnival Glory has been exceptional as these convenient and affordable departures provide residents of the Northeastern U.S. with a fun, memorable vacation option – right from their own backyard,” said Gerry Cahill, Carnival president and CEO.  “We’re pleased that the Carnival Glory will return to Boston next year with even more fantastic dining, bar and entertainment innovations for our guests to enjoy,” he added.

The Massachusetts Port Authority recently spent $11 million in capital improvements to its Cruiseport Boston Black Falcon Cruise Terminal with the expectation that the investment would pay dividends in a busier terminal.

“We are delighted Carnival Glory is coming back to Cruiseport Boston in 2013,’’ said David S. Mackey, Interim CEO & Executive Director of the Massachusetts Port Authority. “The Carnival Glory is the largest ship to be home-based at Cruiseport Boston, and the additional seven-day itineraries that will be added next year offer more cruising choices to more New Englanders.’’

Unforgettable Shoreside Experiences Within Atlantic Canada
Saint John, featured on four-day cruises, is a nature lover’s paradise highlighted by such landmarks as the Bay of Fundy, with its backdrop of rugged rock formations, and Reversing Falls, where the highest tides in the world intersect with the Saint John River and force it to flow backwards twice daily. Also popular is the city’s Historic District, lined with stately Victorian homes, elegant churches and quaint boutiques and eateries.

Five-day cruises call at both Saint John and Halifax, Nova Scotia’s charming and historic capital offering a host of outstanding restaurants, shops, and museums and unique cultural experiences. Guests can also visit Peggy’s Cove, a rustic fishing village famous for its granite coastline, tour the city’s many lighthouses, or observe the changing of the guard at The Citadel, a centuries-old fortress.

Seven-day cruises feature visits to Saint John and Halifax, as well as stops at Portland, Maine; and Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Located on the south coast of Maine, Portland is widely known for its rugged landscape and delectable cuisine, particularly lobster. Guests can experience this waterfront city’s diverse culture and heritage or visit nearby Kennebunkport, a coastal town offering picturesque views and a variety of recreational activities.

Sydney, Nova Scotia, is a charming city with plenty of attractions, museums and shopping opportunities. It is also located within close proximity of the historic Cabot Trail, named after explorer John Cabot who discovered the region in 1497 and offers breathtaking views of the North Atlantic seaboard and its awe-inspiring natural beauty.

Luxury Operator Crystal Cruises Focus' on the 'New" in New England Canada With Unique Excursions
Luxury Operator Crystal Cruises Focus' on the 'New" in New England Canada With Unique Excursions
Crystal Cruises’ fall voyages through America and Canada’s “East Coast” roots offer dozens of new boutique adventures ashore; new chic spaces on board; and a brand new, exotic Québécois itinerary with three off-the-beaten-path maiden calls.  Beginning September 19 aboard Crystal Symphony – freshly redesigned during a $15 million extreme makeover – five seven- to 11-day cruises will sail between Boston, Manhattan and Montréal.  The season’s centerpiece, Crystal’s first-ever round-trip from Montréal, is an easy, seven-day intimate exploration of European-flavored French Canada, including a maiden call to France itself.
Twenty-nine new Crystal Adventures offer novel ways for foodies, adventurers, and culture-hounds to experience the historic region’s most iconic and less-expected areas, like:
  • Saint-Pierre & Miquelon: Visit North America’s last vestige of the French Republic and see Al Capone’s “home-away-from-home” during the island’s golden era of Prohibition profiteering.
  • Québec City: Join Huron natives in a Friendship Dance and sacred ceremonies following a traditional feast of bison, wapiti meat and Indian bannock bread.
  • New York: Sail past the Statue of Liberty to the newly-completed 9/11 Memorial or enjoy an exclusive, private visit to the American Museum of Natural History while closed to the public.
  • Havre-Aubert Island (from Magdalen Is.): Listen to a Madelinot fisherman’s tales of maritime life of yore.
  • Halifax: Look for the majestic North American bald eagle during a Shubenacadie River Zodiac ride.
  • Bar Harbor: Glide over Acadia National Park’s treetops in an open-cockpit biplane.
  • Magdalen Islands (maiden call): Learn about the distinct Acadian culture and taste local specialties like porto-style fortified wine, Pied-de-Vent cheese and bagosse “island beer.”
  • Montréal: Jet boat away from the Old Port, down the Lachine Rapids.
  • Sept-ÃŽles (maiden call): Train-ride to a marshland Innu camp for immersion into traditional First Nations life, from chanting and smoked salmon secrets to moccasin and medicine-making.
  • St. John: Heli-fish in the footsteps of Prince Charles on the Miramichi River or have “Tea with Eleanor” Roosevelt at her and Franklin’s former summer residence.
  • Boston: See what some call New England’s most well-preserved (and picturesque) Colonial town during a half-day in Marblehead and witch trial-famed Salem.
Aspiring photographers can also learn pro tips to capture the “perfect shot” of Halifax or St. John during photo excursions there, and bike-riders can work off their sea legs through NY’s Central Park, or Montréal’s 236 miles of bike paths.  Additionally, Crystal’s You Care, We Care voluntourism program offers complimentary opportunities to assist with local Canadian food banks or help low-income and homeless Bostonian children.
“New England/Canada is one of the most storied and stunning regions in North America and offers so much to explore and discover.  Each year, we strive to not only expand our offerings with new ports, but also re-invent the journey with new experiences in traditionally popular destinations,” says John Stoll, vice president, land and port operations.
Until August 31, all-inclusive, “Book Now,” cruise-only fares start at $2,355/person, double-occupancy with attractive air add-ons from more than 90 North American gateways, and savings for family/friend groups of six or more.
The renowned Crystal Experience was recently voted the “World’s Best” by Travel + Leisure magazine readers for the seventeenth year in a row, more than any other cruise line, hotel, or resort in history.

Norwegian Cruise Line announced today that it has engaged celebrity chef and Food Network star Geoffrey Zakarian to create and oversee a seafood concept to open May 2013 on the line’s newest ship, Norwegian Breakaway.

Iron Chef Zakarian set to open his next restaurant, Ocean Blue, on the largest ship to home port in New York Harbor
Iron Chef Zakarian set to open his next restaurant, Ocean Blue, on the largest ship to home port in New York Harbor

The restaurant, Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian, is envisioned as a luxury seafood dining experience, utilizing all of the ingredients and techniques that Zakarian would employ in a land-based establishment.  In addition to the dining room that will focus on elegant modern presentations, Zakarian will have The Raw Bar, an adjacent bar highlighting crustaceans and wines by the glass; and Ocean Blue on The Waterfront, a more casual dining option serving fun and easy fare.  With an eye for detail, Zakarian will orchestrate not only the menus, but every aspect of his dining areas, from the uniforms to the glassware. On select sailings, Zakarian will also host meet-and-greets with Norwegian Breakaway guests, along with in-person cooking demonstrations and intimate cooking experiences for smaller groups.

“It is an unbelievably exciting prospect to create a concept for such a groundbreaking ship. I am nostalgic at heart, so the thought of making a modern experience that harkens to the age of steamship travel is just terrific,” said Geoffrey Zakarian.  “I am planning, preparing and recruiting for this restaurant the same as if I were opening on land, and truly, I have been humbled and inspired by Norwegian's vision to elevate hospitality on the seas.”
Zakarian's taste, style and passion for fine cuisine have defined his career, which has spanned more than 25 years. An accomplished chef who has presided over some of the country's top kitchens, he currently has two popular restaurants in New York City – The Lambs Club and The National; one in Atlantic City – The Water Club at Borgata; and a highly acclaimed cookbook “Geoffrey Zakarian’s Town/Country: 150 Recipes for Life Around the Table.” Zakarian emerged victorious in the recent fourth season of Food Network's The Next Iron Chef, Super Chefs. He appears regularly on Iron Chef America, demonstrating a razor-sharp knowledge of culinary techniques in this fast-paced cooking competition. When he's not battling in the kitchen stadium, Zakarian stays busy filming CHOPPED, where he is featured as a recurring judge, and highlights his favorite dishes on The Best Thing I Ever Ate.
“Geoffrey Zakarian is a renowned and critically acclaimed chef who has deep roots in New York City having begun his career at Le Cirque and the legendary 21 Club,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer.  “Working with Geoffrey is like hitting the culinary lottery. In this case, not only do we win big, but so do our guests on Norwegian Breakaway who will get to experience his world-class cuisine in three dining outlets on the ship. We couldn’t be more excited to have Geoffrey on board with us and add yet another New York element to Norwegian Breakaway.”
Currently under construction at Meyer Werft in Germany, Norwegian Breakaway will arrive in her year-round homeport of New York City in early May 2013. The ship will begin weekly summer seven-day cruises to Bermuda on Sunday, May 12, 2013.  From October 2013 through April 2014, the ship will offer voyages from the heart of Manhattan to the Bahamas & Florida and the Southern Caribbean.
Norwegian Breakaway will be the largest ship ever to home port in New York City and will embark on weekly cruises from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.  The ship calls will bring an estimated 140,000 additional embarking passengers into New York City over two years, resulting in an estimated $35 million in additional direct spending in the City.

Norwegian Cruise Line Reveals Entertainment Venues on the New Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Cruise Line's New Norwegian Breakaway.
Norwegian Cruise Line's New Norwegian Breakaway.
June 28, 2012 Norwegian Cruise Line continued its legacy of innovating cruise ship entertainment as it announced that the five-time Tony Award nominated musical ROCK OF AGES will be featured on Norwegian Breakaway, along with two additional Broadway shows: the dance sensation BURN THE FLOOR and CIRQUE DREAMS & DINNER JUNGLE FANTASY.  The line also introduced all of the varied and exciting entertainment acts and venues that will debut on the ship, including the famed comedy troupe The Second City and Howl at the Moon at Headliners Comedy Club and New York’s own Slam Allen in Fat Cats Jazz & Blues Club.
“As a lifelong New Yorker, it’s critically important to me that Norwegian Breakaway becomes New York’s ship – the only way to cruise from New York when she arrives next May. Our goal is to bring elements of New York on board so that guests will feel a real connection to the ship as New York’s true flagship,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer.  “With ROCK OF AGES performing in the Breakaway Theater, along with BURN THE FLOOR, CIRQUE DREAMS & DINNER JUNGLE FANTASY in the Spiegel Tent, and all the other entertainment offerings, we are truly bringing Broadway to the high seas and delivering the high caliber entertainment that New Yorkers have come to expect.”
ROCK OF AGES is one of the longest running shows in Broadway history and offers Broadway’s best party.  The New York Times has called the show, “Absurdly enjoyable! About as guilty as pleasures get!” The classic rock love story of the decade features such feel-good, sing-out-loud songs such as “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” “I Wanna Know What Love Is,” “Here I Go Again,” “Don’t Stop Believin,” and more.  The Broadway show is now also Hollywood’s biggest party as the film of the musical by New Line Cinema was released on June 15, 2012.
In addition to being a bona fide Broadway hit musical, ROCK OF AGES was a runaway success in Toronto and Australia; has a production running in London’s West End; and has several successful licensed productions in Asia.
ROCK OF AGES is lead produced on Broadway by Michael Cohl and Jonathan Linden of S2BN Entertainment and Matthew Weaver. Norwegian Breakaway will feature multiple, specially-designed entertainment venues throughout the ship so that guests can choose from a wide variety of entertainment each evening of their cruise with choices to appeal to a broad audience.

BURN THE FLOOR
Offering shows in both the 800-seat Breakaway Theater and more intimate performances in The Manhattan Room, dance sensation BURN THE FLOOR will dazzle guests with their re-invented ballroom dancing.
Beginning with, and maintaining all the wonderful traditions and the social history of the Ballroom dance art form, BURN THE FLOOR is a groundbreaking show, serving as a melting pot of styles, energy and excitement for today’s generation of dancers.  It is Ballroom “supercharged.”
During the course of the show, the dancers perform all the Ballroom and Latin styles, including The Waltz, Cha Cha, Samba, Salsa, Rumba, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Mambo, Tango, Swing, Jive, Lindy Hop, Viennese Waltz, and Paso Doble. The music is eclectic, from Swing and Waltz classics to J-Lo and Credence Clearwater. Two vocalists perform in many languages during the show, including English, Spanish and Portuguese.
The show premiered in London in 1999 and toured the US for the first time in 2000, including performances at Radio City Music Hall.  After touring around the world, in a variety of countries, including Japan, Singapore and Australia, BURN THE FLOOR premiered on Broadway in 2009. In Papenburg Germany, on May 4th, at Meyer Werft Shipyard, the keel was laid for Norwegian Cruise Line's newest ship - the Norwegian Breakaway. In just under a year, the shipyard will assemble the great ship just in time for her maiden overnight voyage from Rotterdam, Netherlands to England on April 28, 2013.

On April 30th 2013, the Norwegian Breakaway will set sail on a 7-day transatlantic voyage from London to New York, before settling in on her 7-day cruises to Bermuda.

Below is more details on the keel laying of the Norwegian Breakaway and Ceremony.

Norwegian Cruise Line executives and officials from Meyer Werft took part in the Keel Laying Ceremony of Norwegian Breakaway at the ship yard in Papenburg, Germany on Friday, May 4.  During the official ceremony, the first of 73 blocks that will comprise the 144,000 gross ton vessel was lifted into the covered building dock, marking the start of the block assembly.

In the dock, Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer, laid the traditional "lucky coin," before the 350-ton first block was placed by the 800-ton crane. A special commemorative coin was created to celebrate the day’s activities.
“The anticipation is building for this incredible ship,” said Sheehan. “It’s thrilling to mark the start of the block assembly and realize that in one year we will take delivery of Norwegian Breakaway.  We can’t wait.”
Norwegian Breakaway is the first ship being built by Meyer Werft utilizing a more efficient construction process which will deliver a ship of more than 140,000 gross tons in less than 12 months.
“We are so proud to begin the process of constructing the ship out of 73 blocks that form the structure of the ship and are looking forward to seeing it take shape over the coming months,” said Bernard Meyer, managing director of Meyer Werft.  “Norwegian Cruise Line has a reputation in the industry for innovation and we are very happy to continue that with this new ship.”
