Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Glory Emerges from Refit

Carnival Cruises - Carnival Glory Emerges from Major Refit.
Carnival Cruises - Carnival Glory Emerges from Major Refit.

The Carnival Glory returned to service on 11/15/2012 following an extensive, multi-million dollar renovation that added an array of exciting on-board spaces, from a new burger venue developed by Food Network personality Guy Fieri and a pair of tropics-inspired poolside watering holes to a “cocktail pharmacy”-themed lounge called the Alchemy Bar.

Carnival Glory’s new dining, bar and entertainment options are part of Fun Ship 2.0, a $500 million product enhancement initiative that is being rolled out across the Carnival fleet.

Following a special three-day cruise from Miami to Nassau that departed later on 11/15, Carnival Glory will launch a winter schedule of seven-day Caribbean voyages beginning Nov. 18.  In June 2013, the ship will reposition to Boston for a series of four- and five-day Canada voyages before heading to New York for four- to seven-day Canada/New England departures through October.

Here’s a rundown of the many new features added to the Carnival Glory during its two-week dry dock:

  • Guy’s Burger Joint, a complimentary poolside venue offering fresh-made burgers, hand-cut fries and innovative toppings and condiments created by Food Network personality and chef Guy Fieri
  • BlueIguana Cantina, a free-of-charge Mexican cantina with authentic tacos and burritos that can be personalized by diners at an extensive salsa and toppings bar
  • Alchemy Bar, a cocktail “pharmacy” where highly trained mixologists create custom cocktails using interesting flavors and ingredients
  • EA SPORTS Bar, an interactive sports bar where patrons can view live action, play popular EA SPORTS video games and keep up with the latest scores on the 24/7 sports ticker
  • RedFrog Rum Bar, a poolside Caribbean-themed watering hole offering a variety of the region’s top rums and beers, which are enjoyed in a laid back island-infused atmosphere
  • BlueIguana Tequila Bar, a friendly rival to the RedFrog Rum Bar, this lively and engaging poolside bar specializes in frozen cocktails and Mexican beers, in a fun and festive environment
  • The Punchliner Comedy Club & Punchliner Comedy Brunch Presented by George Lopez, who is taking Carnival’s popular comedy offerings to the next level with hilarious, side-splitting comedians and a humorous twist on the traditional mid-morning culinary feast
  • Cherry On Top, which celebrates the joys of simple indulgences with bins of bulk candy, fun fanciful gifts and novelties, custom apparel and more

·         Hasbro, The Game Show and Playlist Productions will also be added to Carnival Glory over the next several weeks. Hasbro, The Game Show makes guests the stars of the show through larger-than-life adaptations of the company’s iconic board games, while Playlist Productions is a dramatic retooling of Carnival’s legendary revues that combines captivating live performances with high-tech LED staging and special effects that set a new standard in seagoing productions.

Port of New York Continues to Recover From Hurricane Sandy

Brooklyn Cruise Terminal - Happier Times - Before Hurricane Sandy Flooding
Brooklyn Cruise Terminal - Happier Times - Before Hurricane Sandy Flooding
The Manhattan and Brooklyn Cruise Terminals suffered significant damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy. The Storm Surge caused the river to rise some 10 feet and flooded the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal AND the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.

Damage was extensive to the one level Brooklyn Cruise terminal, flooding the terminal building and damaging cruise passenger's cars in the facility's parking lot. The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal will  remain closed until the December 22nd arrival of the Queen Mary 2 - if not further delayed.

The Mahattan Cruise Terminal did not fend too well either. The flooding that occurred caused damage to the lower level and nearby power facilities,  knocking out the associated power to the piers. Reportedly the lower level of the Terminal had 5 feet of Hudson River water inside.

In order to handle the ships as soon as possible, after the water subsided, emergency generators were brought in to provide lighting and the power. No power was available for the elevators or escalators making the handling of arriving and departing passengers with luggage more difficult. Cruise passenger embarked and disembarked from the lower level of the terminal.

Pier 88 faired better than Pier 90 since the renovations/remodeling of Pier 88 provided some added safe guards against flooding (ie elevating some of the key facilities up from the lower level floor). Pier 90 is expected to take some time to come back on-line.

Cunard's Queen Mary 2 is expected to arrive at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal on 11/27 (Tuesday) since the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal is temporarily out of commission.

Carnival Cruises Carnival Legend Adds Additional Sailings Including a Repositioning Cruise From New York
After announcing an increase in presence in Europe during 2013, Carnival Cruise Line has  opted to cut five sailings from the Carnival Legend's Autumn 2013 schedule.

Impacted sailing include the September 25, October 7 and 31 and November 12 and 27, 2013 departures, which have been replaced with several repositioning cruises.

Replacement cruises include :

  • A 15-night transatlantic crossing departing Dover September 25 and arriving in New York on October 10. Ports of call include: Dublin, Ireland; Glasgow (Greenock), Scotland; Belfast (Northern Ireland); Reykjavik, Iceland; Qaqortoq, Greenland; and St. John's, Newfoundland (Canada).

  •   A 10-night Caribbean cruise from New York to Tampa departing October 10, calling at Grand Turk, Aruba, Curacao, Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman.

  •  A five-night Caribbean cruise sailing roundtrip from Tampa October 21, visiting Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

  • The ship will also sail an eight-night Caribbean cruise rountrip from Tampa departing October 26 with calls in Grand Cayman, Mahogany Bay (Roatan), Belize and Costa Maya. Legend will then resume its originally scheduled seven-night Caribbean rotation from Tampa beginning on November 3.
Although no reason was provided for the schedule change, industry sources cite high transatlantic airfares and weak cruise demand for 2013 European cruises as potential reasons.
