The snow storm and blizzard like conditions which impacted most of the US also impacted the Port of New York and the most recent call of Cunard's Queen Mary 2.
The major snow storm, which had strong gusty winds frigid temperatures and driving snow hit the New York Metropolitan Area starting around 6 PM on January 2nd. In order to beat out the worst of the storm the Queen Mary 2 sped to New York arriving some 10 hours ahead of schedule (approximately 8 PM on January 2nd). The Queen Mary 2 weathered the storm tied to her Brooklyn berth.
The Queen Mary 2's departure on January 3rd was delayed due to snowy road conditions and the delayed arrival of passengers flying into the area. Many area airports were closed or had significant flight cancellations/delays.
Since the cruise was a 7-day transatlantic crossing - flying passengers to the next port of call to meet up with the ship was not an option.
The Queen Mary 2 sailed from New York at approximately 12:45 AM on January 4th from Brooklyn On Saturday morning, the Queen Mary was off the far tip of Long Island speeding to Europe at 23 knots.
Here is the statement that was placed on Cunard's Website (Cunard.com) concerning the 1/3/2014 Queen Mary 2 departure.
