Cunard Line is honored to announce that His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will make a return visit to Queen Mary 2 in her homeport of Southampton on Friday, 9 May 2014 and attend a reception and lunch being held to celebrate the flagship’s 10th anniversary in service.

During his time on board, His Royal Highness will visit several behind-the-scenes areas and meet with various crew who perform different roles on the ship.  Further details of the 9 May visit will be announced shortly.

“We are delighted and honored that His Royal Highness has agreed to visit Queen Mary 2 and take part in our flagship’s 10th anniversary, having been present at her entry into service,” said David Dingle, CEO of Cunard Line.  “For all those involved, this will surely be another memorable occasion in Cunard’s 175-year history.”

The most famous passenger ocean liner in the world, and for 10 years now the flagship of the Cunard fleet, Queen Mary 2 was named by Her Majesty The Queen at Southampton in January 2004 during the most spectacular event of its kind ever. His Royal Highness was also in attendance.

Since then, Queen Mary 2 has undertaken a total of 419 voyages including over 200 Transatlantic Crossings, called at 182 ports in 60 countries and carried over 1.3 million guests.

Master and Commander: Cunard Captures Dramatic Images of Captain Standing Beneath Soaring Hull of Queen Mary 2 off Bali Coast

In early March, Cunard captured dramatic photographs of Captain Kevin Oprey, Master of Queen Mary 2, standing beneath the flagship’s soaring hull a mile off the coast of Bali during the ship's World Cruise in her 10th anniversary year.

The amazing images by James Morgan show Captain Oprey surveying the scene from the top of Queen Mary 2's bulbous bow, an underwater projection that minimizes the creation of bow waves around the waterline when the ship is under way.  Two safety craft were standing by during the photo shoot, but Captain Oprey remained sure-footed throughout.

As she continues on her 2014 World Cruise, Queen Mary 2 will make her 10th port of call at Sydney on Friday 14 March after circumnavigating Australia.  She will then head north towards Shanghai, Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok and Singapore before turning west for Sri Lanka and Dubai. Next, she will enter the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal and return to Southampton, England, on 9 May to mark her 10th anniversary of becoming Cunard's magnificent flagship.  Sister ships Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria will join in the exuberant celebrations.

At 151,200 tons, Queen Mary 2 is the largest and most expensive ocean liner ever built, accommodating 2,620 passengers and 1,253 crew.  In her first 10 years of service, following a spectacular naming by Her Majesty The Queen on 8 January 2004, Queen Mary 2 has undertaken more than 420 voyages, including over 200 Transatlantic Crossings, and has called at 182 ports in 60 countries.

She remains the longest, tallest, widest ocean liner ever built, as well as being the most famous and fastest passenger ship in operation today.

A Decade of Excellence: Queen Mary 2 Celebrates Her First Ten Years

Cunard's Queen Mary 2 In New York Harbor - Soon to Celebrate Her 10th Anniversary

Cunard Flagship has Traveled Nearly 1.5 Million Nautical Miles and Carried 1.3 Million Passengers

Major 10th Anniversary Celebrations to Occur on 9 May and 16 May 2014 Transatlantic Crossings

Cunard Line’s flagship Queen Mary 2 will celebrate her first ten years of service in 2014.  Since her spectacular naming by Her Majesty The Queen on 8 January 2004, Queen Mary 2 has undertaken a total of 419 voyages, including over 200 Transatlantic Crossings, and has called at 182 ports in 60 countries. "Since entering service in 2004, Queen Mary 2 has reigned supreme on the Atlantic and around the world, proudly carrying more than a million guests,” said David Dingle, CEO of Cunard Line.  “She has attracted awards, accolades and admiration as the greatest ocean liner ever built for a decade now and we intend to mark her first ten years of service in style.”

Since becoming Cunard flagship on completion of her maiden Transatlantic Crossing in May 2004, Queen Mary 2 has remained unchallenged as the world’s largest, longest, tallest, widest and most expensive ocean liner ever built and the most famous and fastest passenger ship in operation today.

At 1,132 feet in length, if stood on her stern, Queen Mary 2 would be taller than New York’s Empire State Building and more than three times the height of St Paul’s Cathedral in London.  Her 151,400 gross tonnage is the equivalent of nearly 19,000 London buses, and she boasts over four times as many rooms as the Dorchester Hotel.  She took a million hours to design and eight million hours to build, and the 1,000 miles of welding that holds this amazing liner together would stretch from London to Moscow.

In her first ten years of service, Queen Mary 2 has sailed the equivalent of three times to the moon and back, carrying more than 1.3 million guests, enough to fill Westminster Abbey 651 times. In addition, more than 2,000 dogs have travelled on Queen Mary 2, five times as many as in the UK’s famous Battersea Dogs Home.

Looking after the guests on board Queen Mary 2 is what Cunard does best, and over the past decade the crew have served over 58 million meals, sufficient to feed the combined population of Hong Kong, Sydney, Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro and Dubai for an entire weekend.  The 21.9 million cups of tea served on board to date would fill an Olympic swimming pool three times over.  If the 2.7 million scones baked on board were stacked on top of each other, they’d reach 80 miles in height.

Cunard’s passengers have enjoyed almost 8,000 guest lectures, the equivalent of nearly a year’s continuous radio broadcast.  And they love to celebrate on board, too: the one and a quarter million bottles of champagne consumed since Queen Mary 2’s launch would be enough to fill 200 world-record-breaking 23-foot-high champagne waterfalls.

Queen Mary 2 will depart on her tenth World Cruise on 10 January 2014 when she and Queen Elizabeth sail together from Southampton after a fusillade of celebratory fireworks.  The major 10th Anniversary celebrations will begin on 9 May 2014 when all three ships of the Cunard fleet will arrive together in their homeport of Southampton and sister ships Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth will salute the flagship’s first ten years.  The day will feature special sail-pasts, a celebratory lunch and a spectacular send-off of fireworks as all three ships set sail together from Southampton that evening, with Queen Mary 2 leading the way.  Further details about the day’s events planned will be forthcoming soon.

That day, 9 May 2014, Queen Mary 2 will set out on the first of two special commemorative Crossings to and then from New York that underline her role as the only passenger ship in the world maintaining a scheduled service across the Atlantic, something a Cunard ship has done since 1840.

Taking part in Cunard’s acclaimed Insights speaker program during the 9 May 2014 Crossing to New York will be two special speakers: Commodore Ron Warwick, who holds the distinction of being the first Master of Queen Mary 2, and Stephen Payne OBE, who was largely responsible for the overall design of the ship.  In their separate talks, they will present fascinating insights into the operation and construction of the world’s grandest ocean liner.

Both Commodore Warwick and Payne will be guests of honor at a gala evening on board which will include a commemorative dinner with a special menu.  In addition, vocalist/tenor Ben Makisi (billed as “The Voice of the South Pacific”), magician Philip Hitchcock and violin duo “Elektra” will thrill passengers on board for the Crossing.

Both the Commodore and Stephen Payne will sail from New York to Southampton with Queen Mary 2 on the 16 May 2014 Crossing, and will be joined by comedian Roy Walker as part of the entertainment line-up.

Cunard's Queen Victoria Celebrates Her 5th Birthday

On December 11, 2012 Cunard Line’s Queen Victoria celebrated her fifth anniversary, as five years ago she departed on her Maiden Voyage from her homeport of Southampton – a day after being named by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall with HRH The Prince of Wales in attendance. Since then she has sailed over half a million nautical miles, called at 196 ports in 63 countries and carried almost 250,000 guests, many of whom enjoyed the experience so much that they have traveled many times with the ship already. In all, 20,300 bottles of champagne – enough to fill six Olympic-size swimming pools – have been drunk and 9,125,000 cups of tea and 1,460,000 scones have been served since 11 December 2007!

To mark this special birthday, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall will make a return visit (her third in five years) to her ship on 13 December in Southampton and spend time meeting crew before unveiling a specially-commissioned portrait of herself and cutting a special birthday cake.

“We are very proud of Queen Victoria, her crew and her achievements since she entered service. To have a visit from Her Royal Highness will be a very special moment for the ship’s company. Queen Victoria is known as a happy ship and is certainly extremely popular with Cunard’s discerning guests.”

Queen Victoria is one of the most celebrated ships to be introduced in recent years and she quickly established herself as a popular member of the Cunard fleet continuing in style the line’s traditions established 172 years ago.

Now the third largest Cunard ship ever built (she was the second largest when she entered service but her sister Queen Elizabeth assumed that position when she joined the fleet in 2010) Queen Victoria has never been about size superlatives – she is about style. When the designers of Queen Victoria began to consider the ship's interior public spaces, they drew on the well-recorded and rich history of previous Cunard ocean liners to set the tone.

From the ship's double and triple-height spaces - a design feature of grand liners of the past - to rooms imbued with an elegant yet understated British charm, the overall effect is both contemporary and classically historic with some exciting innovations. These include the first traditional West End-style private viewing boxes at sea in the Royal Court Theatre, the first Cunardia exhibit display at sea, housing Cunard artefacts and memorabilia and the first two-storey library at sea featuring an elegant spiral staircase.

Queen Victoria made Cunard history when in December 2010 the company’s first-ever female Captain, Inger Olsen, took command.

The Queen Victoria is an occasional caller at New York - Usually as part of her World Cruise or Repositioning from her West Coast deployments.
