Carnival to Resume Sailing From Baltimore Starting in March 2015.

Carnival Pride to Return to Year Round Baltimore Cruises Starting March 2015.
Carnival Pride to Return to Year Round Baltimore Cruises Starting March 2015.

Carnival Cruise Lines and the Port of Baltimore announced that the cruise line will resume year-round departures from Baltimore when the 2,124-passenger Carnival Pride begins seven-day cruises in spring 2015.

Carnival Pride is currently based in Baltimore where it will remain through October 2014 then reposition to Tampa for a winter cruise schedule before returning to Baltimore for year-round service in March 2015, hosting nearly 120,000 guests annually.

In anticipation of Carnival Pride’s return to Baltimore, the ship will undergo an extensive multi-million-dollar makeover in fall 2014 that will add a host of dining, bar and entertainment innovations that are part of the line’s $500 million Fun Ship 2.0 product enhancement program.

In addition to the new on-board features, Carnival Pride is one of several Carnival Cruise Lines ships that will be outfitted with exhaust gas cleaning technology – known as scrubbers –designed to reduce air emissions from cruise ships and large marine vessels. Scrubber technology will be installed on Carnival Pride prior to its Baltimore deployment in spring 2015.  This new technology will enable the Carnival Pride to exceed the stricter air emission standards established for operation within the North American Emission Control Area (ECA).

“Baltimore is a convenient mid-Atlantic embarkation point for ‘Fun Ship’ cruising and we’re pleased to resume these attractive year-round departures which offer our guests an opportunity to visit a variety of beautiful, tropical destinations,” said Gerry Cahill, Carnival’s president and CEO. “We would like to extend our thanks to officials from the port and the state of Maryland for their outstanding support in our efforts to resume year-round cruising from Baltimore,” he added.

“We are pleased to welcome Carnival Cruise Lines back to Maryland and the Carnival Pride cruise ship back to the Port of Baltimore,” said Governor Martin O’Malley. “Our Administration has a proven track record of advocating for a strong, healthy environment and fighting for high-quality jobs for Maryland families. I’m pleased Carnival and the Environmental Protection Agency and Coast Guard have agreed on a plan that will keep family-supporting jobs in Maryland and allow a cleaner and even greener Carnival Pride to return to this thriving cruise market.”

Year-Round Seven-day Cruises From Baltimore

On its year-round deployment from Baltimore, Carnival Pride will offer two distinctly different itineraries with voyages departing every Sunday beginning March 29, 2015.  Week-long exotic eastern Caribbean cruises will visit Grand Turk, the private Bahamian island of Half Moon Cay and Freeport, The Bahamas, while a Florida/Bahamas schedule will feature Port Canaveral, Fla. (Orlando), and Nassau and Freeport, The Bahamas.

During these cruises, guests can relax on beautiful white-sand beaches, participate in fun watersports activities and visit popular landmarks and attractions throughout the Caribbean, Bahamas and Central Florida.

Exciting Fun Ship 2.0 Innovations

Carnival Pride will undergo a three-week dry dock from October 19 to November 9, 2014, during which it will be outfitted with a variety of Fun Ship 2.0 innovations, including:
  • Guy’s Burger Joint, a free-of-charge poolside venue developed in partnership with Food Network personality Guy Fieri serving hand-crafted burgers and fresh-cut fries in an atmosphere that celebrates the chef’s California roots and love of car culture

Special 14-Day Repositioning Cruise from Tampa to Baltimore

Prior to its Baltimore deployment, Carnival Pride will operate a 14-day repositioning cruise departing Tampa March 15 and arriving Baltimore March 29, 2015.

Pearl Seas Cruises' Pearl Mist Slated to Begin Cruising in June 2014

Pearl Mist - Courtesy of Pearl Seas Cruises

Pearl Seas Cruises, and international off-shoot of American Cruise Lines will beginning operations on June 28th 2014 from Baltimore. The small ship, which only accommodates 210 passengers will begin a series of cruises throughout the Northeast US before heading up the Saint Lawrence Seaway for a summer season int he Great Lakes. After the season in the lakes, the ship will head back out to the Northeast US and Canada before eventually spending the winter in the Caribbean and Central America.

The Pearl Mist was constructed during 2009. Pearl Seas Cruises and the original builders in Halifax, Nova Scotia entered into a multiple year legal battle when Pearl Seas Cruises refused to take ownership stating the ship was not delivered according to specifications. Just this year (2013) that battle has been settled and the Pearl Mist's ownership was transferred from the shipyard to Pearl Seas Cruises. Pearl Seas Cruises is currently correcting the items that were not to specifications in a second shipyard (which is owned by their parent company). The work is being completed just outside of Baltimore and the ship will be ready to sail beginning in June 2014.

Pearl Seas Cruises is an international, small ship cruise line off-shoot of American Cruise Line. The Pearl Mist is registered in the Marshall Islands.

Casinos are Open On Bermuda Cruise Ships After 9 PM.

Celebrity Ship Entering St. George Bermuda
Celebrity Ship Entering St. George Bermuda
Cruise ships visiting Bermuda are now allowed to keep their casinos open when in port since the passing of the Cruise Ship (Casino) Act of 2013.

The concession — allowing on-board casinos to operate between 9pm and 5am — would ensure Bermuda remained competitive as a cruise destination.

The move would economically benefit both the cruise companies, which would increase their on-board revenue, and the Island, which would collect license fees.

Ships would have to be in port for one night or more to qualify for permission.

The use of the casino is to be limited to passengers on board the ship only. No local residents or visitors to the ship will be allowed to participate in casino activities.

Smaller ships, capable of berthing in Hamilton and St George’s, with a passenger capacity not exceeding 2,000, would not be charged a licence fee.

The fee is being dropped to attract smaller, high-end ships and that the exemption could encourage more visits.

Bermuda See Tourism Drop

Picturesque Bermuda
Picturesque Bermuda

Over the past year, Bermuda has seen a reduction in the number of cruise passengers arriving.

The reduction has was mainly due to:

  • Holland America choosing to deploy the Veendam in Boston instead of New York choosing to go to New England Canada instead of Bermuda.
  • Royal Caribbean has also reduced the number of Bermuda sailings both out of New York and Baltimore in favor of Florida and Bahamas cruises.

In addition to these planned changes,

  • Bermuda lost 4 calls at the island by the Emerald Princess. The change was due to repairs to the Heritage Wharf which meant the the ship would need to tender in passengers instead of docking.
  • Three sailings were cancelled due to the fire onboard the Grandeur of the Seas.

The losses were partially offset by the new and larger Norwegian Breakaway calling at the island and bringing more passengers than the previous Norwegian Gem and Norwegian Star.

The second quarter ended with 133,676 cruise passengers arriving. A 17% decrease over last year.

Since then, the ship has been in the Grand Bahamas Shiyard undergoing repairs.

The fully restored Grandeur of the Seas arrived in Baltimore on Wednesday  (7/10) after undergoing 6 weeks of repairs. Upon arriving in Baltimore, she sailed on an overnight cruise for the media, and travel agents to showcase the ship.

The Grandeur will resume her regular cruise schedule from Baltimore starting today - July 12. Current schedules have the Grandeur of the Seas deparing Baltimore though April 2015.

As a side note: In preparation for  her series of sailings from Baltimore, the Grandeur underwent a major, $48 Million dollar refit in Cadiz, Spain in 2012

Bermuda Contemplates Pier at St. Georges

Celebrity Cruises Horizon Entering St. Georges Bermuda
Celebrity Cruises Horizon Entering St. Georges Bermuda

Reports are surfacing in Bermuda that government officials are contemplating constructing a pier in St Georges Bermuda. The pier will be long enough to handle the large new generation of cruise ships. Currently Bermuda only has 2 piers at the Dockyard capable of large ships. The Dockyard is a short ferry ride from the country's capital of Hamilton Bermuda - where the ships docked previously.

St. Georges, Bermuda is capable of handling 2-Mid-sized ships simultaneously but the entry to the port is too narrow for the larger, wider ships to pass through. Currently St. Georges has less than 5 ship calls per year and most shops have closed since few passengers travel from the Dockyard to the other end of the island. Under consideration for the new pier is the deep water  location near Murray’s Anchorage area.

The new port facilities at St. Georges is supposed to be decided upon in early in 2013. The Bermuda Government is partnering with a unspecified cruise line, to develop the port.

Bahamian Government Permits Royal Caribbean to Perform Wedding at Sea

Bahamian Government Permits Royal Caribbean to Perform Wedding at Sea
Bahamian Government Permits Royal Caribbean to Perform Wedding at Sea

Engaged couples can now experience the romance of being joined at sea by the Captain aboard a Royal Caribbean International ship through the Royal Romance weddings and vow renewal program. The Commonwealth of the Bahamas has cleared the cruise line to conduct legal weddings aboard the world’s most innovative cruise ships while they are at sea. A Royal Caribbean ship is an ideal option for a ‘multi-destination’ wedding, able to cater to large parties, attended by family members and friends, to smaller – but still unforgettable – affairs. Couples wishing to share this special moment with friends and family can enjoy the Sweethearts at Sea promotional offer, inclusive of a ceremony performed by the Captain, photography and more, when booking 12 or more staterooms on a 2013 Royal Caribbean International sailing during the special introductory offer.

“Thanks to the support of the Bahamas, our guests can now be married during the course of their Royal Caribbean cruise and bask in the romance of the sea as they exchange their vows,” said Adam Goldstein, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International.  “Royal Caribbean's staff and crew will cater the affair with our world-renowned friendly and engaging Gold Anchor Service to help make the day extra special for the couple and their guests.”

“The Bahamas is happy to participate in this venture with Royal Caribbean International,” said Senator Allyson Maynard-Gibson, Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs, the Bahamas.  “This premier cruise line has been bringing visitors to our beautiful country for many years, and we know that the Royal Romance weddings and vow renewal program will encourage even more visitors to our beautiful shores.”

The Royal Romance team of wedding specialists are poised to assist couples during this momentous occasion in their lives and are eager to help create a beautifully personalized event that reflects the bride and groom’s desires. From day one, the Royal Romance team assists in wedding planning services, including any legal requirements pre-departure, and once onboard, the Royal Romance Coordinator ensures every last detail is taken care of for the special moment.
Brides and grooms looking to marry onboard a Royal Caribbean ship will be married in a manner that is legally recognized by the Bahamas through the newly passed Marriage Act.  The act allows for marriages while in international waters, which is defined as outside the 12-mile limit of the territorial waters of any nation. The actual location of the ship when the marriage takes place is then recorded in the Marriage Record book of the Bahamas.

Couples have several customizable Royal Romance Package options that celebrate their big day and include all the essentials for creating the perfect wedding. For example, the Royal Romance at Sea package includes: the ceremony performed by the ship’s captain, a groom’s boutonniere, a rose bouquet for the bride, freshly-made cake, recorded music and a live soloist during ceremony, wine at the ceremony, dinner for the bride and groom at an onboard specialty restaurant, photography services, plus champagne and strawberries in the couple’s stateroom.

The Sweethearts at Seas promotion offers couples a complimentary Romance at Sea package when they share their happy memories with family and friends and their wedding party books 12 or more staterooms on a 2013 cruise of five nights or longer.  Those couples booking 25 or more staterooms can enjoy the above, plus a complimentary stateroom upgrade, bar service and an hors d’oeuvres reception.

Royal Romance also offers vow renewal packages, symbolic services and customized proposal packages. Complementing Royal Romance’s packages is Royal Caribbean’s Honeymoon Registry which continues the romance with friends and family contributing to a couple’s ideal Royal Caribbean honeymoon cruise.  Instead of the standard pots and pans, the couple’s family and friends can contribute to a dinner at a specialty restaurant, a couple’s massage, or an excursion.  Couples can add all of the onboard activities they’d like in the registry, where their family and friends can even contribute to the cruise fare and help make the dream of vacationing to far-off places a reality.
The Sweethearts at Seas is now available to be booked for cruises starting January 1, 2013. For more information about the Royal Romance Program contact your preferred travel agent, visit Royal Caribbean at www.RoyalCaribbean.com/weddings or call 888-WED-RCCL (888-933-7225).
