Cunard Line Queen Mary 2 Sailing From New York in 2015
With an eye towards the company’s 175th anniversary in 2015, Cunard Line is excited to announce its 2015-2016 Voyages Program.   The program includes 15 commemorative cruises and events that will pay homage to Cunard’s significant historical moments, as well as unique voyages in the Mediterranean and iconic adventures around the world that will satisfy any globetrotter’s wanderlust.

Dingle continued, “Combined with our series of news-making celebratory cruises for our 175th anniversary, Cunard is the outstanding cruise choice for 2015 aboard the finest ships of their class.”

The 2015-2016 Voyages Programme goes on sale 8 April 2014, with Pre-Registration beginning 20 March 2014, 6:00 a.m. PT (9:00 a.m. ET).

Flag this message Cunard Line's New Dress Codes Celebrate the Chance to Dress Up - and Relax

Cunard Line Guests Enjoy Formal Nights

Cunard Line has renewed its commitment to the joy of dressing up on-board “The Most Famous Ocean Liners in the World” with an update to its dress codes, while at the same time encouraging the loosening of ties on its less formal nights.

Research with existing passengers and luxury travelers generally has led Cunard to strengthen the Line’s commitment to special occasion dressing three times a week on its Transatlantic Crossings and twice each week on sailings to the Mediterranean, Scandinavia and beyond.

However, also in response to growing travel trends, Cunard is adjusting its advice on dress codes for other nights.  The result:  along with two or three formal nights each week, there will be four or five “informal” evenings where jackets are required but ties will now become optional, heightening the sense of anticipation for formal nights even more.

Cunard to Offer Behind the Scenes Tours

Adding to its comprehensive catalogue of on board activities, Cunard Line is now offering Behind the Scenes Tours for the curious guest.  Led by Cunard senior officers, the tours offer guests unprecedented access to the ships’ private areas, such as the Medical Centre, Engine Control Room, Butchers Shop and the Mooring Deck.  Topics range from environmental concerns, such as recycling 15,000 litres of used cooking oil, to the logistics of stocking more than 5,000 lines of consumable products, such as shower gel and beef joints.

“Similar to a feat of magic, our seamless ocean travel experience results from a delicate balance between what’s seen and not seen,” said Peter Shanks, president of Cunard Line.  “Our Behind the Scenes Tours offer the inquisitive guest an intimate glimpse of what goes into the way we run our ships to ensure their comfort, safety and satisfaction.”

During the 222-step tour, guests learn first-hand of the many provisions required to manage Cunard Line’s ocean liners.  Tour stops include:

  • The Bridge – At the widest part of the ship, the captain and navigational officers greet guests and give a tutorial of all the dials, buttons, radars and navigational charts that help them safely helm Cunard’s Queens.

  • Royal Court Theatre – Guests peruse more than 3,000 costumes in the costume store, and light and sound engineers give hands-on lessons in operating the stage equipment.

  • Galley and Provisions – Guests catch a glimpse of the complex logistics of moving provisions around the world in containers and picking them up in different ports mid-voyage, to accommodate 11 tonnes per day. The tour includes stops at the Food Stores, Butchers Shop, Freezers, and the Galley.

  • Mooring Deck – Guests learn the purpose of the anchor winches, windlesses and other critical machinery on the most forward part of the ship.

  • Medical Centre – Guests tour Cunard’s floating hospital and meet the exceptional medical staff that keeps everyone on board healthy and well.

  • Burma Road – Guests tour the only main crew passageway to run the entire length of the ship and get a behind the scenes look at where the crew and officers socialise after work.

  • Waste Handling Room – Guests observe Cunard’s round-the-clock waste handling operation, and learn the differences between five waste sorting streams: hazardous, recyclable, suitable for incineration, food waste and suitable for donation.
Available on board Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth, Cunard’s Behind the Scenes Tours last three and a half hours and cost $120 per person.  Currently, one tour with a maximum of 16 guests is available per voyage and can be booked on board through the Tours Office.

Cunard's Queen Victoria Celebrates Her 5th Birthday

Cutaway Drawing of the Queen Victoria and Stats from The first 5 Years - Click to enlarge

On December 11, 2012 Cunard Line’s Queen Victoria celebrated her fifth anniversary, as five years ago she departed on her Maiden Voyage from her homeport of Southampton – a day after being named by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall with HRH The Prince of Wales in attendance. Since then she has sailed over half a million nautical miles, called at 196 ports in 63 countries and carried almost 250,000 guests, many of whom enjoyed the experience so much that they have traveled many times with the ship already. In all, 20,300 bottles of champagne – enough to fill six Olympic-size swimming pools – have been drunk and 9,125,000 cups of tea and 1,460,000 scones have been served since 11 December 2007!

To mark this special birthday, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall will make a return visit (her third in five years) to her ship on 13 December in Southampton and spend time meeting crew before unveiling a specially-commissioned portrait of herself and cutting a special birthday cake.

“We are very proud of Queen Victoria, her crew and her achievements since she entered service. To have a visit from Her Royal Highness will be a very special moment for the ship’s company. Queen Victoria is known as a happy ship and is certainly extremely popular with Cunard’s discerning guests.”

Queen Victoria is one of the most celebrated ships to be introduced in recent years and she quickly established herself as a popular member of the Cunard fleet continuing in style the line’s traditions established 172 years ago.

Now the third largest Cunard ship ever built (she was the second largest when she entered service but her sister Queen Elizabeth assumed that position when she joined the fleet in 2010) Queen Victoria has never been about size superlatives – she is about style. When the designers of Queen Victoria began to consider the ship's interior public spaces, they drew on the well-recorded and rich history of previous Cunard ocean liners to set the tone.

From the ship's double and triple-height spaces - a design feature of grand liners of the past - to rooms imbued with an elegant yet understated British charm, the overall effect is both contemporary and classically historic with some exciting innovations. These include the first traditional West End-style private viewing boxes at sea in the Royal Court Theatre, the first Cunardia exhibit display at sea, housing Cunard artefacts and memorabilia and the first two-storey library at sea featuring an elegant spiral staircase.

Queen Victoria made Cunard history when in December 2010 the company’s first-ever female Captain, Inger Olsen, took command.

The Queen Victoria is an occasional caller at New York - Usually as part of her World Cruise or Repositioning from her West Coast deployments.
